A Research Of the Events Leading Upto World War II By Tuchman's Gun's Of August. One of the deadliest wars in world history, World War I, lasted from July of 1914 until November of 1918. This was one of the first wars to be defined as a global war. This essentially means that all of the world ââ¬Ës superpowers were fighting and consequently the whole world was affected. The worldââ¬â¢s powers all gathered together and were part of either two groups. The first group was the Allies, which consisted of France, the British Empire, and the Russian empire. The second group was the Central Powers, which consisted of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Germany. In The Guns of August, Barbara Tuchman examines the months leading up to the war and the first few months of it. Specifically, she focused her narrative on the military history aspect of World War I. Overall, Tuchman depicts an extraordinary prelude to World War I, such as the decisions of the superpowers involved and world events that affected the war. It has been described by the reviewer Samuel R. Williamson Jr. as ââ¬Å"one of the finest works of historyâ⬠¦[and of being a part of] the best sellers list for more than forty weeksâ⬠. Tuchman begins her book by illustrating her thought process behind her work and the methods that she used. She starts with an introduction that exemplifies the need for facts and connections in order to accurately depict World War I. In the Foreword, written by Robert Massie. In this foreword, Massie reflects on Tuchmanââ¬â¢s writing process and how she describes her work. On page xi, Massie states that in regards to Tuchmanââ¬â¢s work, she asked numerous questions and ââ¬Å"[her] research was too find outâ⬠¦ what really happened.â⬠In other words, Tuchmanââ¬â¢s question would be ââ¬ËWhat really and factually happened in the prelude and first few months of World War I?ââ¬â¢ On page xi, there is another question; Massie describes Tuchmanââ¬â¢s efforts to get at ââ¬Å"how it actually felt for the people present?â⬠In other words, Tuchmanââ¬â¢s question would be ââ¬Ëhow did World War I make the people involved feel like?ââ¬â¢ In the authorâ⬠â¢s note, Tuchman herself, once again reiterates this question and how she answered it throughout her book. In the authors note, Tuchman goes on to explain how she answered these questions. In seeking answers to these research questions, Tuchman gathered great amounts of information from various types of sources. On page xxiv, Tuchman states that the first question was answered based on evidence from documents sheââ¬â¢s gathered and even that ââ¬Å"all conditions of weatherâ⬠¦in the following pages [of the novel] have documentary supportâ⬠. Some examples of documents that she used to answer this question are primary sources of battle orders, telegrams, secret codes, maps, and weather reports. On page xxiv, Tuchman states, in regard to the second question, she had a ââ¬Å"total immersion in military memoirsâ⬠¦[and] allâ⬠¦ thoughts or feelings, in states of mind public or privateâ⬠¦ Have documentary support.â⬠Similarly to the first question, this quest ion is also omnipresent throughout the novel. Therefore it is hard to pinpoint the documents used to answer this question down to one. Nevertheless some examples of primary sources she used to answer this question are letters, memoirs, dairies, and pictures. Nevertheless, Tuchmanââ¬â¢s approach strays from the classic historiographical approach from here on out. Her study is more of a descriptive history than one of pure analysis. In one book review, Jeanne Lombardo states that Tuchman used ââ¬Å"the historicist technique of combining documentary evidence with the powers of the imaginationâ⬠¦ [which] she uses to paint a vivid, living picture of the events and individuals of August, 1914.â⬠It is important for readers to understand that although Tuchman doesnââ¬â¢t come right out and say what her analysis is, it doesnââ¬â¢t mean it is nonexistent. Tuchman utilizes her documents in a way, which creates an eloquent story. Tuchman backs up this idea when she states that she believes ââ¬Å"the very process of transforming a collection of personalities, dates, gun calibers, letters, and speeches into a narrative eventually forces the ââ¬Ëwhyââ¬â¢ to the surfaceâ⬠(xii). It is also important to include the interpretation of Ulrich Trumpener. He states in his book review published in The Journal of Modern History that The Guns of August was a great narrative work, but ââ¬Å"as a scholarly contribution to the history of World War I it is less than satisfactoryâ⬠¦ [Tuchmanââ¬â¢s] story is only partially based on the best available evidenceâ⬠¦[and contains] oversimplifications.â⬠Trumpener continues to discuss how The Guns of August increasingly left out information regarding certain countriesââ¬â¢ contributions to the war. Nevertheless, Tuchman addressed this issue in her authorââ¬â¢s note where she stated there was some omission regarding certain fronts throughout her book. In regard to these omissions, she states that they were ââ¬Å"outside my chronological limits and it seemed to me there was unity without it is the prospect of tiresome length if they were includedâ⬠(xxiv). Personally, I believe that her descriptions were all based on fact and the omission of certain aspects was essential. This is because it would have been detrimental to her interpretations and consequently her narrative descriptions. Overall, Tuchmanââ¬â¢s sound research through both primary and secondary sources regarding World War I led to her study revolving around what she believed truly led to the war. She had numerous interpretations from her analysis of the documents. She specifically believed that there were roughly four reasons that this war started. The first reason she believes was due to a misconception regarding the free trade and the idea it would stop a war because people would want to avoid economic consequences. This idea can be idea can be shown on page 12, where Tuchman states: Lord Esher delivered lectures on the lesson of The Great Illusion at Cambridge and the Sorbonne wherein he showed how ââ¬Ënew economic factors clearly prove the inanity of aggressive warsââ¬â¢. A 20th Century war will be on such a scale, he said, that itââ¬â¢s inevitable consequences of ââ¬Ëcommercial disaster, financial ruin and individual sufferingââ¬â¢ would be ââ¬Ëso pregnant with restraining in fluencesââ¬â¢ as to make war unthinkable. In this quote, Tuchman illustrates the belief that the war was considered unthinkable due to the economic effects it would have. Tuchman uses a source that included the preachingââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ by someone who was considered highly educated to prove this point. The Second reason Tuchman believed that the war happened the way that it did was due to ideologies regarding warfare. Tuchman thought there was too much of an emphasis of the countries involved on the idea of a quick war and staying on the offense. She demonstrated this idea on page 372, where she stated: Clausewitz [a German] had described terror has the proper method to shorten war, his whole theory of war being based on the necessity of making it short, sharp, and decisive. The civil population must not be exempted from wars the fax of estimate feel itââ¬â¢s pressure and be forced for the severest measures to compel their leaders to make peace. In this quote, Tuchman illustr ates her thought that the war happened the way it did because the leaders of the nations involved believed that the war was bound to be quick and short. This specific example revolves around the German peoplesââ¬â¢ ideologies of a short war and the need to always attack. Tuchman used Clausewitz to prove the pressures of a short war and offensive attacks. The third reason Tuchman discussed revolved around the effects of the treaties. Tuchman emphasized how the treaties and alliances resulted in a type of domino effect, which resulted in more countries becoming involved with the war. Tuchman describes this idea on page 63: The government maintained the disingenuous position that the military ââ¬Å"conversationsâ⬠were, in Haldaneââ¬â¢s words, ââ¬Ëjust a natural and informal outcome of our close friendship with Franceââ¬â¢. Natural outcome they might be; informal they were notâ⬠¦ the General Staff have ââ¬Ëcertainly committed us to fight, whether the cabinet likes it or not.ââ¬â¢ In this quote, Tuchman explains her thought that the war happened the way it did because of how many intertwined alliances and treaties there were. This specific example revolves around the connection between the U.S and France and how their alliance essentially meant that if one of them went to war, they both had to. Lastly, another in terpretation she came across was the contradictions involved in the warfare, such as having technological advances but sticking to the traditions of wars in the past. She discusses this on page 457: Doumergue made a deep impression when he said, ââ¬Ëit takes more courage to appear a coward and risk popular disfavor interest being killed.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦[This statement] provided a subject for further heated dispute. In this quote, Tuchman outlines a heated debate from this time. This debate was essentially one revolved around trying to overturn distiniguished ideals on the ethics of war. Previously, it was thought it was better to die in battle than to give up. Nevertheless, the use of that ideology in this war was detrimental to the militaries because of the invention of new weapons. Tuchman decided to write The Guns of August when a publisher, Cecil Scott of the Macmillan Company, invited her to write a history describing the events that took place during this war. In the preface, Tuchman described a concern she had about the idea that no one would be interested in such a topic or read this book. She stated, ââ¬Å"In moments of depression during the course of writing, I had asked Mr. Scott [the publisher], ââ¬ËWho is going to read this?ââ¬â¢ (xxi) The book was originally intended for an audience that had previous knowledge of World War I and wanted to see an interpretation of how it felt for those involved. Nevertheless, as a richly descriptive study with a blend of imagination and evidence, resulted in it becoming a widely read book across a variety of populations. The book turned out to be a great resource for those interested in studying the origins of World War I, but needed a captivating story to keep them entertained while learning. The feature that was often denounced by some, the writing style being a descriptive narrative with imaginative pieces based on fact, is what ultimately led to its widespread popularity. Tuchmanââ¬â¢s writing style in this text matched the needs of the intended audience and this outreach included every day people. Making the compelling story based on the facts allowed people who would normally be bored by history to become captivated. An example of Tuchmanââ¬â¢s ability to present fact with an interesting narrative can be shown on page 90: Meeting the censure of his comrades, Admiral Troubridge demanded a Court of Inquiry which order to his trial by court-martial in November, 1914, on the charge that ââ¬Ëhe did forbear to Chase H.I.G.M.ââ¬â¢s ship Goeben, being an enemy then flyingââ¬â¢. Tuchman is able to bring Admiral Troubridge to life. She captivates her readers through not only listing the facts but also using fantastic diction, such as the word ââ¬Å"demandedâ⬠. Nevertheless, she is also able to give her readers the facts needed to understand the causes of World War I. In this instance, she was able to give a quote from a secondary source, an article on Troubridge. This use of captivation is done by one of the three types of historical writing, Narrative writing. This is because narrative writing is used when the author wants to chronologically tell an event; in this case it was the prelude to the war. Also this style is usually used when an author is telling a military history, which Tuchman is. The Guns of August is, ultimately, an insightful and rigorous work that describes the military history of World War I. Tuchman was able to coherently voice her interpretations on the reasons the war occurred through a descriptive narrative. Although, there are some differences in opinion revolving around Tuchmanââ¬â¢s analysis, she does a great job utilizing her sources in a way to prove the economic and militaristic reasons behind the inevitable Global War. Some of the most commonly used miticides include tetradifon, azobenzene and dicofol. Most miticides are designed to kill the eggs and larvae of pests, but some also kill adult pests. Some miticides are known to be poisonous to honeybees and other useful insects. Despite knowledge of this adverse effect of miticides on honeybees, these substances continue to be manufactured and applied to crops widely in the country. An antibiotic is defined as a molecule or an agent that either kills or interferes with the growth of a living thing that is too tiny for the naked eye, also called a microorganism(Hawthorne and Dively 26). Analysis of Oklahoma :: essays research papers
I see now after reading Oklahoma why this musical has remained so popular throughout the years. Iââ¬â¢ve always found it easier to watch a musical as opposed to reading one. However, the lively, upbeat tempo of the musical really made me feel that I was watching it. à à à à à With Oklahoma taking place shortly after the turn of the century I think it brought on a whole new genre of entertainment to people. Although the plot is very simple and predictable it was portrayed in an upbeat way that people where not used to seeing. One observation I had from the reading Oklahoma was the clever way they used the music as part of the dialogue. Most plays use song as a way to keep the audience entertained. However, I think Oklahoma used the music to tell the stories of the characters in the play. Several characters were introduced during songs of the musical. The characters would sing songs either about themselves or others in the play. It was a way for them to express their feelings about one another and allow the story to progress on in a smooth manner. à à à à à Most of the characters in the play seemed to be fairly young, energetic people. Their problems were so much more manageable and yet handled in a way that did not affect society. Their idea of marriage was so simple. They all knew they would be marrying someone from their territory and raising a family without ever leaving to see what was outside of the territory. To me, that seems like such a sheltered way to live your live. But now dayââ¬â¢s things are so much more complicated. Problems that could be manageable are blown out of proportion and marriages end in divorce and broken families. People are constantly moving and unsettled. Explore the presentation of Nick as a narrator in the first three chapters of The Great Gatsby
Nick comes across as an unreliable narrator throughout the first three chapters of ââ¬ËThe Great Gatsbyââ¬â¢, especially during Chapter two at the party, where his use of ellipses suggests to the reader that his knowledge is distorted. Also, nick is unable to give an accurate account of what has occurred in the society he has become acquainted with before he moved to West Egg and therefore his insights into events are based on hearsay and rumours. Jordan has become a source of Nickââ¬â¢s intelligence, and he demands information from her at Gatsbyââ¬â¢s party ââ¬â about Gatsby himself ââ¬â however he then goes on to describe her as ââ¬Ëincurably dishonestââ¬â¢, casting doubt on everything she has said previous to this. Furthermore, Nick does not confirm whether the information he has been told is truthful or not, he merely states what he has been informed without expanding on this, thus it is unclear to the reader if Jordan is a reliable source of information . Nick himself is going through an internal conflict, implying that he cannot give an accurate, unbiased account of what is going on in other peopleââ¬â¢s lives. It is clear that he is struggling between two contrasting lifestyles ââ¬â the pleasure-orientated, fast-paced life of New York and the conventional, fairly nondescript background he came from where, he believes, morality is still valued. This suggests that he is so concerned with his own problems that he cannot afford to think through the events of other people. Despite this, Nick seems drawn towards the garishly ostentatious lifestyle that he is introduced to at Gatsbyââ¬â¢s party and appears to forget his morals and ideals ââ¬â ââ¬Ëon my way to get roaring drunkââ¬â¢; this story is set whilst prohibition was in place, and so to get ââ¬Ëroaring drunkââ¬â¢ was to go against the law. This contradicts his earlier statement, ââ¬Ëwanting the world to be in uniformââ¬â¢ which implies that he wants the strict discipline and uniformity of society during the Great War back, despite him participating in many activities that would strongly go against this ââ¬â for instance, his drunken fiasco at Myrtleââ¬â¢s apartment. Incidentally, the morals he so strongly believes in are questioned through his meeting with Myrtle ââ¬â she is Nickââ¬â¢s cousins husbands mistress and yet he seems to have no objection to their affair, despite the seemingly close relationship he has with Daisy. Furthermore, the ease at which he has adapted his characteristics is similar to the ease that the disciplined society of the Great War changed at its sudden abrupt end; although he is being critical about the changes that have happened since that point in time he is actually changing in the same way, thus emphasising his hypocritical mannerisms. Nick seems to have been caught up in the moral decay of the society; the only mention of his engagement is from Daisy in Chapter 1, and in the form of the ââ¬Ëcertain girlââ¬â¢ that played tennis at the end of chapter three, but the lack of detail given about her suggests that he doesnââ¬â¢t believe that fact to be entirely important ââ¬â especially considering that Nick is writing about past events. Based on the romantic imagery that he uses ââ¬â ââ¬Ëone of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassuranceââ¬â¢ ââ¬â and the romantic ideals he appears to believe in, it seems out of character for him to skip over his engagement, thereby suggesting that he has been caught up in the moral decay within the society. Nicks character portrays something different to what Nick as a narrator thinks. Nick believes he is ââ¬Ëinclined to reserve all judgementsââ¬â¢, however he immediately contradicts this by stating he has been made ââ¬Ëvictim of not a few veteran boresââ¬â¢, reiterating his obvious hypocrisy. This is the narratorââ¬â¢s attempt to make the reader aware that although many opinions are not voiced, they are still there and various techniques are used throughout to novel to allow the reader to draw their own conclusion ââ¬â especially symbolism. Whilst Nick realises that Tom, Daisy and Jordan are dishonourable people, he still spends a great deal of time with them, choosing to neglect their faults; it is more important for him to fit in with these rich, sophisticated people that to risk his friendship with them by pointing out their imperfections. It is this reservation of the truth that leads the reader to question Nickââ¬â¢s reliability and honesty, and it is also this that makes him conform to the majority of society; most people are dishonest and they sacrifice their honesty to fit in with the rest of society. Nick seems to be a bit of a wallflower throughout the first three chapters in that he doesnââ¬â¢t get involved in the events that are happening all around him and appears to blend in with the background. This is especially apparent in Chapter Two; whilst Nick is at Myrtle and Tomââ¬â¢s apartment he merely sits and watches everyone else in the room. It implies that he doesnââ¬â¢t have a mind of his own ââ¬â he would rather sit and watch from the side-lines than actually get involved ââ¬â and this is emphasised when Tom drags him off the train to meet Myrtle, ââ¬ËI followed himââ¬â¢. The valley of ashes appears to intrigue and repulse Nick almost simultaneously ââ¬â this is made apparent through his use of imagery, ââ¬Ëspasms of dustââ¬â¢. This is perhaps because, whilst Nick thinks that he has seen the ââ¬Ëreal worldââ¬â¢ he has in fact only seen a shaded version of reality as he comes from a reasonably well-off background ââ¬â implies through his great-uncle being able to send a ââ¬Ësubstitute to the Civil Warââ¬â¢ in his place, which was something that only the rich could achieve. Part of Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s skill in ââ¬ËThe Great Gatsbyââ¬â¢ shines through the way he cleverly makes Nick a focal point of the action, whilst simultaneously allowing him to remain sufficiently in the background, thereby being able to comment on what events were unfolding; throughout the novel, Nick functions as Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s voice.
